I am decorating my house

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

I am decorating my house at the moment and am thinking of getting new carpets everywhere as removing the furniture has really shown up the dirt on the floors! We are going to have someone in to do some quotes for us so that we can get an idea of cost. One thing that concerns me about getting new flooring is that certain parts are likley to wear out more quickly than others. I have been looking at getting some chair mats so that the carpets can be protected. I am especially concerned about the chairs at the desks because they have wheels and I think the fact that they will be moving back and forth all of the time will mean that there will be lots of wear on the carpet.

I hope that I can find a nice chair mat so that I can put it under the office chair and it will blend in with the room but still protect the carpet. I also need something which is the right size for the little floor space that we have in there as well as being safe with the chair that we have. I should be able to find a good computer chair mat for that purpose hopefully.

Window Replacement

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

I am looking for a window replacement Utah company at the moment. My windows are really draughty and so I want some mew ones. They have wooden frames and are about twenty years old and they have warped over the years. This means that when it is breezy or cold, the draught blows through the house. The front door and back door are draughty and they are opposite each other which means there is a through draught. On the first floor there are French doors opposite each other and we get the same problem with draughts. Then the main bedroom has the same type of draughty door.

The glass in a lot of the windows has blown meaning that it steams up between the pains of glass so they look dirty all of the time. I want to do some major renovations in the house and this Utah replacement windows will be the first part of the job. Hopefully it will save us some money on our heating bills as well. We are hoping that getting some new doors will smarten up the front of the house and the garden too. We are not supposed to change the front of the house so we may not be able to change the front door but hopefully might be able to find one that looks the same but is plastic and therefore not so draughty.

Be In Control with Your Own Stuff

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

If you want to be in control with your own things, you have to know where they are located and how they are well placed inside a room. In your bathroom, you can make use of a bathroom organizer where you can put all your towels, under wear and etc. in it. Through this bathroom organizer, you will not have to go outside your bathroom and wet your entire floor with excess water from your body. Another thing that you can use inside your bathroom is a wall spice rack, quite surprising? Yes, you can make use of a wall spice rack by putting your toothbrush and toothpaste on it.

See? You just have to be imaginative to play around with your interior design. Another thing that comes from the kitchen and can be used inside the bathroom is a hanging spice rack. You can actually make use of it by putting some fresh flowers or plants in it. Through this, it will make you bathe more and more giving a natured feel inside your own bathroom, especially when looking up on your hanging spice rack. Undoubtedly, you can play with your imagination to give your bathroom a twist of design that you will surely love.

Can you remove the top layer of paint leaving the bottom layer on?

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

I painted my green hutch blue five years ago and want it green again. Can I use something to take the blue paint of leaving the old green paint intact?

I used to work in the paint dept. at Lowe’s. As the previous poster said you could try but it’s going to prove rather difficult your best bet would be to go to say Lowe’s ask for a quart or a gallon(depending on how big your hutch is) of High Hiding Primer it is intended for going over dark colors and you may wish to consider having it tinted to a lighter green that way once you begin to paint and it dries it will blend in.

——

You can try but it will be very difficult to leave the green bottom layer intact. Paint stripper will probably remove some of that as well as the blue. It would be much simpler to just repaint it green.

I shut off my well and now it doesn’t turn on?

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

I needed to replace a couple of leaking faucets and couldn’t get the main water shut off so I turned off my well pump. Now the well pump is “on” but it is just like the water is turned off. I checked the fuses inside the pump box as well as the breaker and they are both ok. There is no switch alongside or inside the pressure relay, only screws. When I turn on a faucet it doesn’t even have a release of air. What have I overlooked?

There should be a small Grey box with a wire going into it.(mounted to the tank or mounted on a pipe.) This will be a low/high pressure switch. There should be 1 screw holding the cover on it. Remove this cover, you will find a set of contacts. Carefully using an insulated screwdriver push the contacts together, it should then come on. When the pressure builds back up it would not need to be done again. Replace the cover.

Yep…sounds like it lost it’s prime. If you have a neighbor that is close by…see about hooking his water hose to the nearest faucet by the well. Turn off your pump and turn on his water. Let the water run for about 10 minutes…..then turn your pump back on…that should kick your pump back into service. You may have to get a double fitting or adapter to hook his male end of hose to your faucet….or just cut off that end of your hose and attach the female end the screw onto faucet.

——

It has lost its prime. There are two places that you can unscrew on the top of the pump. It needs air and water to make it work again. I used to have to do this as a kid and it was not fun. You might try to google it for a more descriptive answer.

Question about washcloths and loofas?

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Ok. I asked how often you should change out your washcloth and people said with every use because the skin and bacteria make it bad to use again.

What about all the millions of loofas in use? The skin is REALLY in them and so would any bacteria. So unless you toss out your expensive loofa every single use, how is it different?

As long as you rinse it out thoroughly and hang it to dry, what is the difference?

You know thats a good one there! I used to use a loofa and never even thought about it being dirty, until one day after many many years I noticed the thing growing something I didn’t want on me. That was the end of my loofa. I change my wash cloths out every other day. One day to wash me, the next to wipe down the sink and top and then into the wash it goes for disinfecting and cleaning. I prefer white ones, as its easy to see if they are clean or dirty and I read once, that dermatologists recommend them for sensitive skins and ones prone to blackheads and white heads.

HELP! How to get finger paints out of clothes?

Friday, June 27th, 2008

My kids went to a friends house this afternoon in their brand new summer outfits and came back covered in finger paints!!!!! The friends mom says it’s just basic finger paint. So how do I get this out?

All paints are actually plastics and dissolve by the following chemicals which should be safe:

Most paints are water based due to the cost of shipping and assembling the paints. First try soaking them in water, the hotter the better as hot water will speed up the paint dissolving. Then flush with lots of water.

Soda is a long shot as all it is is carbonated water - meaning if it works then hot water would work just as well without any cans to open.

Lots of paints have acrylics in them too. Acetone (nail polish remover) should break down the chemical bonds in acrylic allowing it to decompose rapidly, then flush with water.

Hairspray works because of the benzene or alcohol in it. You could also try rubbing alcohol as I’m pretty sure you aren’t much of a drinker (vodka would work as well). These also do a great job of dissolving paints.

On white clothes bleach is always good as it attacks the chemicals as well as removes residue.

Beyond that I could tell you stuff that you would need a gas mask and rubber gloves for, but I’m certain that that list will resolve your problem.

And you though I only ever talked about religion,

——

don’t know if this will work for finger paints but does work on ball point pen ink. spray the article with CANNED HAIRSPRAY, any brand, but must be canned. saturate a spot then BLOT it, DO NOT RUB IT, keep saturating and blotting till the stains are gone.
may or may not work, but for a dollar or two it’s worth a try.
never heard of the hairspray ruining any garments

Are paper tape and masking tape the same thing?

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

Masking tape is a type of pressure sensitive tape made with an easy-to-tear thin paper, and fly back and a removable pressure sensitive adhesive. It is used mainly in painting, to mask off areas that should not be painted. The adhesive is the key element to its usefulness, as it allows the tape to be easily removed without leaving residue or damaging the surface to which it is applied. The tape is available in several strengths, rated on a 1–100 scale based on the strength of the adhesive. Most painting operations will require a tape in the 50 range. Household masking tape is made of an even weaker paper and lower grade adhesive.

Will this look good?

im 14 and painting my room soon.

im not girly at all.
im bold and retro.
do you think two bright red walls and two bright orange walls will look okay?

I like the retro idea, and the black trim, but I would lean a little away from two different bright colors…mostly because your walls will SCREAAAAAM at you. I would find one of those colors, and from personal experience find the color chip you like and go two to three shades lighter. Trust me, I wanted a yellow in my bathroom and I got done and thought I was going to be sick, it was so bold it hurt my eyes. I was much happier with the lighter shade. If you choose red, I recommend that you have the primer tinted, red is a hard color to paint (my kitchen is red), and it took 3 good coats even after the primer. The several coats seemed to make the walls have more depth, strange I know. Also keep in mind as you paint that the paint will take different shades as it dries so don’t freak out until it is dry.

If you want the other colors I say, get some cool retro pillows, that are the other color you like. Also I did this in my daughters room. I painted from the celing down 3 feet once color and then painted a border of another color that was 2 inches wide, you will have to measure and tape this off using a paint tape I used the tape that is have sticky like a sticky note. Anyway, then below the stripe I painted the third color. hers was when she was a little girl and the top was a spring green and the strip was off white and tne bottom was pink. At the top in the spring green I used a sponge stencil and randomly sponged white daisies around on it, and it they had a light yellow center, which was the color of the base boards. i was thinking since you like retro, you could paint the walls down the 3 feet the orange you like then paint the black stripe around and from the bottome of the stripe to the floor I would paint to the floor trim. Paint your trim black, and find some cool black curtains and a black bedspread with orange and red pillows that match the walls. It may be easier to find your bedding before you pick you pain colors. Then if you want to find some cool stencil or just random dots of black on the top three feet of paint.

Just have fun! It is nice to see you are not afraid of color.

——

A color like bright red may make it hard for you to relax. Try the main color as bright white with red, black and silver accents.

——–

The best thing to do before you paint, is by a bedspread, or duvet, or a comforter…etc. Whatever it is you want. Then you match the paint colors to the besspread. If you get a black and white bedspread, obviously the Red and Orange walls will clash.

Do you have a comforter or something picked out, or do you need to find one? I would be happy to help you look for one if you need.
