Cell phone can unlock car, start engine, 1st Ld-Writethru, AS

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

A new Japanese mobile phone will automatically unlock the doors of its owners’ cars and let drivers start their engines without using an ignition key. The phone, built by Sharp Corp., uses a technology previously developed by Nissan Motor Co. called “Intelligent Key” that allows drivers enter and start their cars without removing their keys from their pockets or bags.

Cars equipped with the system sense when the correct key is nearby, automatically unlocking their car doors, and allow the engine to be started once the key is brought inside the car. Nissan said it has shipped about a million cars with the technology in Japan since 2002.

The new twist on this technology is that it is loaded in a phone. The service will work on the mobile network operated by NTT DoCoMo Inc.

, Japan’s largest mobile operator. The companies said in a joint press release Wednesday they will display the technology next week at CEATEC, a major technology conference in Tokyo.

They are continuing development and aim to bring the phone to market sometime after March of next year. Japanese phones are some of the most sophisticated in the world; most come standard with digital TV, music players, GPS, cameras that double as barcode scanners, and wireless credit cards.

Sony unveils improved PlayStation Portable

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Sales are improving in Japan for Sony Corp.’s PlayStation Portable handheld video game machine, and a beefed up version with a clearer display is expected to add momentum, a senior executive said Tuesday.

The portable game machine faces tough competition from Nintendo DS — the handheld machine from the Japanese manufacturer of Pokemon and Super Mario games. Nintendo also has a big hit in the Wii home console that’s battering Sony’s PlayStation 3 in sales.

The revamped PlayStation Portable with the improved liquid crystal display and a built-in microphone will go on sale Oct. 16 in Japan at the same price of the previous model 19,800 yen ($180), said Shawn Layden, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Japan.

The machine called PSP-3000 is also being promised for the U.S. and Europe next month.

Layden said the PSP was gaining popularity in Japan, nearly doubling in sales for this year’s first eight months compared to the previous year. People are increasingly using it to listen to music, watch video and access the Internet on the go, he said at a Tokyo hotel.

“The PlayStation Portable can be called a PlayStation Personal,” he told reporters. “It has become a lifestyle tool for owners.”

Sony also unveiled a service planned for later this year in Japan that will allow several PSP machines to play games together, even if they aren’t in the same room, by connecting to the Internet through PlayStation 3 machines. Layden said details will be released later.

Competition among game makers is intensifying ahead of the year-end shopping season.

Sony has sold about 41 million PSP machines globally — 10 million in Japan. Nintendo has sold 77.5 million Nintendo DS handheld devices worldwide, nearly 23 million in Japan.

On top of that, Nintendo has scored success with its predecessor GameBoy series, selling more than a 100 million GameBoys cumulative worldwide.

On Monday, price cuts for Japan were announced for Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 home consoles. The Xbox 360 has been struggling in Japan, a market dominated by the locals, Sony and Nintendo.

Microsoft doesn’t disclose how many of the cumulative 20 million Xbox 360 machines sold worldwide were Japan sales. But it is widely viewed to be fewer than numbers sold elsewhere.

The Wii console has been popular, selling 29.6 million worldwide so far. PS3 sales have lagged at fewer than half of the Wii at 14.4 million.

Also shown Tuesday was footage from game software planned for the PlayStation Portable later this year, including “Gundam Vs. Gundam” from Bandai Namco Games and “Dissidia Final Fantasy” from Square Enix Co. Both are part of a game series that are extremely popular in Japan.

Analysts: US consumers buying fewer cell phones

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

U.S. consumers have been buying significantly fewer cell phones but paying higher prices for them, according to a research firm.

The NPD Group said in a report Tuesday that 28 million cell phones were sold in the United States in the second quarter, a decline of 13 percent from the same period a year ago.

It was the third quarter in a row with a year-over-year decline, and the lowest number of phones sold since NPD began tracking the category in 2005, said Ross Rubin, the firm’s director of industry analysis.

However, the phones that were sold tended to have more features and be more expensive, and the total value of the market was down only 2 percent from a year ago, at $2.4 billion, according to NPD.

Motorola Inc.’s phones were the most popular, but its share of the units sold dropped to 21 percent, from 32 percent last year.

One important caveat is that NPD figures were based on online surveys of cell phone buyers, and exclude government and corporate buyers. Figures from another research firm, IDC, indicate that institutional buyers are making up for slackening consumer demand.

Ramon Llamas, IDC’s senior research analyst for mobile phones, said 42.9 million handsets were shipped to the U.S. market in the second quarter, up 6 percent from a year ago. IDC’s figures are based on manufacturer reports.

The average cell phone in NPD’s surveys cost $84, up 14 percent from a year ago, as sales of feature-rich “smart” phones nearly doubled. Cell phones with full-alphabet keyboards, like Research In Motion Ltd.’s BlackBerry models, saw the biggest increase. Meanwhile, sales of simpler phones used mainly for calls are falling off, Rubin said.

“One explanation might be that there’s a group of consumers that’s holding off, making do with the devices that they have, either because of larger economic concerns or because they don’t see any value yet in the new voice and data services that are driving some of these new handsets,” he said.

US physicist develops ‘electrifying’ theory

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

A theory that may help build future superconducting alternating-current fault-current limiters for electricity transmission and distribution systems has been developed, thanks to the efforts of a physicist at the US Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory.

John R Clem says that he has basically identified design strategies that can reduce costs and improve efficiency in a bifilar fault-current limiter, a new and promising type of superconducting fault-current limiter.

Just like household surge protectors that save equipment like televisions and computers from damage during a lightning strike, fault-current limiters protect power grids from sudden spikes in power.

During the study, Clem analysed a type of fault-current limiter, called a bifilar fault-current limiter, developed by Siemens and American Superconductor Corporation.

“I was able to theoretically confirm that planned design changes to the current bifilar fault-current limiter being developed by Siemens and American Superconductor would decrease AC losses in the system. My calculations are good news for the future of the device,” he said.

“I modelled the bifilar design as an infinite stack of superconducting tapes, in which adjacent tapes carry current in opposite directions. I was able to find an exact solution for the magnetic fields and currents that are generated in such a stack of tapes. Once I calculated how the magnetic flux penetrates into the tape, I then could calculate how much energy is lost in each current cycle for different tape widths and spacings between adjacent tapes,” the researcher added.

A research article describing this work has been published in a recent issue of Physical Review B.

What is up with my Panasonic VCR/DVD player?

Friday, July 11th, 2008

I’ve had this DVD/VHS combo player for a few years (translation: no longer under warranty). Lately, it will take forever to run DVDs. Most of the time, it would indicate (on my TV screen) that the DVD cannot be scanned and I would have to put in another DVD disc.

This happens to most DVDs that I play in this device. What is up with this thing? Do I need to take it in to have it repaired or can I get a special “DVD cleaner” by putting in a DVD-disc cleaning thingy (like they have for CD players and VCRs)?

You can try a DVD lens cleaner because it may only cost you only $8 than buying a new player. But taking it to a repair shop is impractical it would be better to buy a newer model, cost less than the repair.
Dirty lens with dust or molds blocking the laser makes the player blind and will command to display “Unreadable or Unknown disk” sometimes “no disk” it is usually accompanied with a strange sound from the motor attempting to spin in opposite just to read the disk, but the lens is partly covered. Did you noticed that?. Other cause is misallignment such that the laser is hiting the disk in a slanted angle and is not able to read it correctly, such cause is mechanical (insertion and ejection of disk). and heat. Although it can be alligned by a technician but you will pay for the service and is highier than buying that $60 players from Walmart or Bestbuy etc.
Maybe you would like to open the player and manually clean the lens with a soft water color brush(not cotton buds)..
Most cases of blind DVD players is dirty lens, but it is also possible that you will scratch the lens while doing manual cleaning and so as using DVD cleaner will leave residue in the lens due to the cleaning fluid..decide

Some Basic and Indispensable Cell Phone Accessories

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

A decade or so ago, people are okay with just the telephone as a form of communication. But then, humans have no contentment so they strive to develop instruments each time. Cell phones and computers are the latest technological advancements that man is currently busy with.

Years ago, cell phones were bulky, expensive, and could be quite difficult to use. Nowadays, cell phones are so distinctive that you would think they come out of a science fiction film. Today’s cell phone features are high-tech and there is very little that this device can’t do anymore.

Cell phones are quite popular so it is normal that another class of products would sprout from this popularity—the cell phone accessories.

There are various forms of accessories to choose from. Some of the most basic are:

· USBs—these are storage devices that are being used for cell phone to cell phone or cell phone to pc data transfers.

· Headsets—these provide convenience as the user no longer needs to take out his phone out of his pocket each time it rings. All that he has to do is use the headset and say: Look ma, no hands!

· Batteries—they used to come in nickel cadmium and nickel-metal hydride but most of them are now in lithium-ion material which is more earth friendly. This accessory is used to give power to the cell phone unit so this is crucial as compared to other accessories.

· Antenna—if batteries give power to the cell phone unit, the antenna is responsible in getting a good reception by boosting up the network signal.

There are many other accessories that people could now purchase. In fact, if a user would give in to each of his wants in cell phone accessories, he would spend more than $1000 in just a day!

What is better HDTV or a plasma t.v. and why?

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

Well, if your Plasma TV is not HD, then the HD is better. This is because television stations are required to change their format to Digital in the coming years. This means that any TV which is not Digital ready may become obsolete without a conversion device. It is unclear if having Cable/Satellite will allow such a conversion, but if not, then almost all televisons made in the last several years will be difficult to use without a convertor. No solid news as to how much such a convertor might cost.

Federal regulations require that any conversion to HD (High Definition) TV me made in such a way that non HD receivers can still get the signal. There are other problems as well at this moment. Remember the problem, years ago, between VHS and Beta TV recording technologies? Well, VHS won and those who bought Beta lost their money! At this moment, some of the same thing is going on, there are two systems to record HD programs. I would advise you to just wait till the whole thing settles down on a single system, not to mention that the prices are bound to go down, before making a decision.
