There can be wheels attached to the legs make the transportation easy. In case you want privacy of the user, then they can be designed like that giving a cubicle like look. The height should be adjustable according to the desk height. It should have sufficiently padded arm and back rests too.

These banquet chairs come in an array of colors and materials to choose from. They weigh very less and since they are stackable, they can be transported easily using carts.

Social networking sites face data cost crisis

Monday, December 29th, 2008

A large number of social networking companies face crisis as digital advertising is on a downswing, revealed a research from consultants Deloitte. The researchers said that the websites, which had survived the downward trend, might be forced to supplement their revenue with pay-subscriptions, selling members’ data or extra financing.

The eMarketer revealed that the predictions came as growth forecasts for digital advertising had halved from 17.2pc to 7.2pc for next year.

According to the Deloitte research, with the revenue declining, the cost of storing electronic data has soared to more than 100m dollars per year for larger sites, as users increasingly want to upload photos and videos, which consume memory.

“The book value of some social networks may be written down and some companies may fail altogether if funding dries up,” the Telegraph quoted Paul Lee, Deloitte director of research for technology and telecommunications, as saying.

He added: “Average revenue per user for some of the largest new media sites is measured in just pennies per month, not pounds. This compares with a typical average revenue per user of tens of dollars for a cable subscriber, a regular newspaper reader or a movie fan.”

Estimates have revealed that there are more than 1,000 social networking sites on the internet.

Among these are almost 100 big players, which are host to 22pc of UK internet users, and the most popular ones, including MySpace, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, are likely to be more resilient in the face of the advertising slowdown.

However, many of the most popular social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, do not yet generate large profits.

“Neither (Facebook or Twitter) has yet demonstrated that it can make money on a scale that matches its number of users. Twitter has yet to sketch out plans to monetise its blogging site. Revenue has always been an issue for Facebook,” said Madan Sheina, an analyst at Ovum.

While Facebook was valued at 15bn dollars, Microsoft at the same time took a 240m dollars minority stake in October last year.

“With the economy spiralling into a downturn that figure might seem to be exaggerated right now,” said Sheina.

Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, has claimed that for the next two years, they are focussing on growth instead of making money.

However, many signs indicate that the company is feeling the strain of the downturn, as it recently cancelled a plan to allow its employees to sell off shares early owing to the current economic recession.

The Extras of Mortgage Marketing

Monday, December 29th, 2008

The concept of mortgage marketing should be pretty simple. If you are in real estate, then you need to do everything that you can to pick up some clients. This should be simple at least. Everyone who’s tried it should know that it is much more difficult in practice.

Part of the problem comes in the extras that happen. You can’t just advertise. You need to reel them into the business. You need to capture the leads that you secure. This could mean a number of things. There are a few automated systems that you can set up to handle your leads and ensure that they stay interested as the days pass. You could also do it the old-fashioned way and call them up yourself. It will depend on just what you like to when you are running your business.

This is just one of the little extras that happen regularly in mortgage loan marketing. If you are trying to bring in new people, then you have to be ready to try some new things and listen to the advice of the experts. You will be happy in the long run and find that it was well worth the minor cost. Your business should be the better for it.

Co-location Server Hosting

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

In business terms co-location which is also called as collocation or co-location is nothing but a group of entities in a single location where as in computing it refers to installing application to run a data in a single process. There are good examples for this co-location such as virtualization, web hosting etc.

Another concept where a single computer can dedicate to your necessities is nothing but dedicated hosting which gives you increase in speed, control and space and is also more flexible than shared hosting. In fact the server administration is usually provided by the hosting company as the add-on service. Regarding operating system dedicated hosting supports any operating service on basis of the particular dedicated server plan.

One of the major advantages of dedicated server hosting is that it has got high powered networks from multiple providers and that is why people often choose this option as outsource. One of the major benefits of dedicated server is reliability because of its cost effective way of using more than one domain and the other major benefit is security which keeps your applications secure unlike a shared web hosting service where there is a chance of making your applications open to see.

Maintaining Water Gardens

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

Water gardens do require some extra attention and care when it comes to maintenance especially the Japanese water garden. This is because of the huge water bed that you will need to have in the garden with lots of fishes in it and hence requires a huge amount of time and energy to be spent on them. The Japanese water garden will require a dedicated person exclusively allotted for them to maintain them, else it would become wasted.

You will need to change the water in your watergarden ponds frequently so as it looks fresh always. Adequate water cleaning materials should be used to avoid pests and worms being developed on those water beds. Water gardens also had to be adequately spaced out to avoid congestion and the water should be separated well from the garden by way of putting borders around them.

If you want to make your kids play on the water garden, you can add in sandbox kits to add more fun to your water garden. Thus you can keep your kids occupied there and you can thus relax in the garden. These sandbox kits can be brought from your neighborhood garden stores or convenience stores or even online.

U.S. not ready for cyber attack, war game shows

Friday, December 19th, 2008

The United States is unprepared for a major hostile attack against vital computer networks, government and industry officials said on Thursday after participating in a two-day “cyberwar” simulation.

The game involved 230 representatives of government defense and security agencies, private companies and civil groups. It revealed flaws in leadership, planning, communications and other issues, participants said.

The exercise comes almost a year after President George W. Bush launched a cybersecurity initiative which officials said has helped shore up U.S. computer defenses but still falls short.

“There isn’t a response or a game plan,” said senior vice president Mark Gerencser of the Booz Allen Hamilton consulting service, which ran the simulation. “There isn’t really anybody in charge,” he told reporters afterward.

Democratic U.S. Rep. James Langevin of Rhode Island, who chairs the homeland security subcommittee on cybersecurity, said: “We’re way behind where we need to be now.”

Dire consequences of a successful attack could include failure of banking or national electrical systems, he said.

“This is equivalent in my mind to before Sept. 11 … we were awakened to the threat on the morning after Sept. 11.”

Officials cited attacks by Russia sympathizers on Estonia and Georgia as examples of modern cyberwarfare, and said U.S. businesses and government offices have faced intrusions and attacks.

Billions of dollars must be spent by both government and industry to improve security, said U.S. Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland, the Democratic chairman of the intelligence subcommittee on technical intelligence.

The war game simulated a dramatic surge in computer attacks at a time of economic vulnerability, and required participants to find ways to mitigate the attacks — using real-life knowledge of tactics and procedures where they work.

It was the broadest such exercise in terms of representation across government agencies and industrial sectors, officials said.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, addressing the participants at the end of the exercise, predicted cyberattacks will become a routine warfare tactic to degrade command systems before a traditional attack. That is in addition to threats posed by criminal or terrorist attackers.

International law and military doctrines need to be updated to deal with computer attacks, Chertoff said.

“We know that if someone shoots missiles at us, they’re going to get a certain kind of response. What happens if it comes over the Internet?,” he said.

Chertoff and Gerencser expressed caution over suggestions earlier this month calling for the appointment of a White House “cybersecurity czar” to oversee efforts. But Ruppersberger disagreed. One person was needed to take charge of efforts and to secure the president’s ear, he said.

Ruppersberger said people close to president-elect Barack Obama’s transition team have convinced him that Obama understands the importance of bolstering cybersecurity.

Deck Out Your Phone!

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Hankering for a fancy cellphone, but feeling guilty about spending in a down economy? Investing in some new accessories can put a new spin on an old phone.

Like any accessory, mobile add-ons run the gamut from practical to pure fun. Some common ones, like basic chargers, cases, headphones and memory cards, can be found in most neighborhood cellphone shops. More offbeat accessories are best sourced from start-ups or overseas sites, like Strapya World, a Japanese purveyor of cellphone charms and decorations.

There is plenty of room for Americans to dress up their phones. Researcher NPD Group found earlier this year that 39% of U.S. cellphone owners have not purchased any accessories for their phones. At the same time, the rise of advanced handsets means consumers are increasingly interested in personalizing their phones, protecting them as investments and increasing their functionality, NPD said. ABI Research predicts the cellphone accessory market will generate more than $40 billion in revenue this year and double to more than $80 billion by 2012.

Hands-free laws in some states and countries are prodding Bluetooth headset sales, says Anurag Gupta, senior vice president of global strategy and investor relations for Brightpoint, a major distributor and customized logistics provider for cellphones and phone accessories. Though headsets can’t morph your phone into a pricey smart phone, some snappy versions, like Motorola’s Motorola MotoPure H15, can certainly make your phone work smarter. “As accessories enhance the ease of cellphone use, people will invest in a Bluetooth headset for their existing phone even if they don’t buy a new phone,” Gupta says.

The laws are also boosting business in cellphone car kits. Devices like in-vehicle Bluetooth speakers and car mounts may make calling while commuting so easy that you’ll forget about that new BlackBerry you can’t really afford.

A sturdy armband is another way to take your phone with you on the go. Several brands accommodate even chunky, older handsets. Some, like H20 Audio’s Amphibx, also keep phones dry up to 12 feet under water.

To protect your phone from future abuse, invest in a protective case. Independent companies offer some appealing alternatives to the boxy versions that come free with most phones. OtterBox makes cases with three layers of protection to guard against scratches and drops. Silicon cases add a dash of color and lightweight protection. Stick-on film will keep screens scuff-free without adding much weight. 3M’s 3M “mobile privacy film” also shields screen images–ideal for, say, keeping mobile banking information secure.

If your handset is looking a little grimy, some sanitizing wipes, a mini vacuum or polishing cloth will help make it shine again. A 2006 U.K. study found that cellphones are a hotbed for bacteria–even more so than toilet seats.

Older phones often suffer from sluggish batteries. Portable chargers, like Energizer’s Energi To Go or Turbo Charge’s slimmer version, can juice up handsets away from home.

If your idea of a mobile accessory is a sparkling charm or colorful faceplate, there are plenty of options, too. A San Francisco-based firm called Coveroo launched Monday with a plan to use lasers to create custom cellphone covers. Designs range from snowflakes to cartoon figures, $20 to $30, and fit on the back of select Samsung, LG, Motorola and BlackBerry phones.

An even cheaper way to give your phone a face lift is to pick up a new cellphone strap, charm or sticker. Small sites excel in this niche market. Take Strapya World, which bills itself as a Japanese cellphone strap superstore. Along with the obligatory Hello Kitty designs, the site stocks rhinestone stickers, static electricity eliminators and small jars containing a moss-like “living creature”–all suited for hanging on or attaching to a cellphone.

If you already have a BlackBerry or iPhone, or will be getting one this season, you may want to indulge in some accessories made specifically for those devices. New York-based Awethumb is selling a set of protectors that wrap around the thumbs to reduce typing-related strain. The company says the plastic caps cushion fingers from the pressure of pounding phone keyboards.

Another start-up, Dots Gloves, has come up with perhaps the first gloves designed to work with iPhone touch screens. The secret? The gloves sport “dots” made of nickel and brass that activate the screens without direct skin contact. It may sound improbable, but the firm says some styles are back-ordered until January. At $15 to $20, like most of these accessories, they’re a budget-friendly way to update your cellphone.
